The ITS300 Flameproof Limit Switch Box is a valve position feedback device designed for direct installation on pneumatic quarter-turn rotary actuators. It mounts to the actuator stem using a NAMUR-standard interface and monitors shaft rotation to generate electrical output signals confirming that the valve has reached the fully open or fully closed position.


This signal transmits to a DCS, PLC, or SCADA control system in real time, allowing remote operators to verify valve state without physical inspection at the field location. In automated pipeline systems, continuous position feedback supports process safety interlocks, emergency shutdown sequences, and audit trail documentation requirements.

Switch Configuration Options

The ITS300 supports three switch technology types. Selecting the correct configuration depends on the site's hazardous area classification, control system supply voltage, and required operating cycle frequency.


Mechanical Switch — 2×SPDT 

Two independent single-pole double-throw contacts actuate through direct mechanical contact with the internal cam driven by the actuator shaft. Each contact provides one normally open and one normally closed output circuit. This configuration requires no external supply to the switch element and is the standard selection for basic on/off interlock circuits and emergency shutdown duty. Contact rating: 5A at 250VAC (standard), with Omron and Honeywell-grade contacts available for higher switching capacity.


Proximity Sensing Switch — Pepperl+Fuchs 

Two P&F proximity switch models are available: the NJ2-V3-N for intrinsically safe 8V circuits, and the NBB3-V3-Z4 for 24V standard supply. Proximity switches detect cam position without physical contact, eliminating mechanical wear over high-cycle operation. This type is selected for automated systems with frequent switching requirements where extended service intervals are needed.


Intrinsically Safe Sensing Switch — Domestic 

The SFB2-V3-Y (8V) and SBB2-V3-DA (24V) domestic-specification sensing switches provide intrinsically safe circuit compatibility for ATEX Zone 0 and Zone 1 classified areas. The SBB3-V3-DA-CX model adds magnetic sensing capability for installations where cam-type mechanical drive is not practical. Intrinsically safe designs limit electrical energy in the switch circuit to below ignition thresholds at the switch element itself.


All switch types share the same ITS300 housing, NAMUR mounting interface, and 8-point terminal strip. Switch type is specified at order placement or factory pre-assembled. 

Explosion-Proof Classification and IP Protection

Understanding Ex d IIC T6 The ITS300 is classified under IEC 60079-1 for flameproof enclosure construction. The designation "Ex d" means the enclosure contains any internal ignition event and prevents flame propagation to the surrounding atmosphere through controlled flameproof joints. "IIC" is the highest gas group classification under IEC standards, covering hydrogen, acetylene, and carbon disulfide — gases with the lowest minimum ignition energy. "T6" limits the maximum external surface temperature to 85°C under all operating conditions, which falls below the auto-ignition temperature of every common industrial flammable gas.


This combination of group and temperature class makes the ITS300 applicable to the widest range of hazardous gas environments, including petrochemical, LNG, hydrogen, and solvent processing facilities.


IP66 Dust and Water Protection 

The IP66 rating provides total protection against dust ingress and resistance to high-pressure water jets from any direction. The enclosure installs in outdoor locations, washdown zones, and environments with wind-driven rain without additional protective housing.

Housing and Mechanical Design

The ITS300 body is die-cast aluminum alloy with polyester powder coating applied over the exterior. Die-casting produces the dimensional precision required for flameproof joint gap tolerances specified in IEC 60079-1. The coating provides corrosion resistance for outdoor and marine-adjacent installations.


A two-directional visual position indicator is built into the cover. The standard color code is red for the closed position and yellow (or green, selectable at order) for the open position. This allows field technicians to confirm valve state visually without electrical instruments.


The upper cover incorporates an anti-removal bolt that prevents the lid from completely separating from the body when loosened. This is a safety feature for maintenance access at height or in confined locations.


The 8-point terminal strip accepts conductors from 0.08 to 2.5 mm². Two cable entries are provided as standard, with options for up to four entries. Thread formats covering NPT 1/2, NPT 3/4, M20×1.5, G1/2, and G3/4 eliminate the need for thread adapters across North American, European, and international conduit systems.


The mounting bracket attaches to the actuator body and connects the ITS300 housing to the actuator stem. The bracket is adjustable in length and height to suit different NAMUR actuator frame sizes. Carbon steel is the standard bracket material. 304 stainless steel is available for corrosive area installations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the functional difference between a limit switch box and an electro-pneumatic positioner? 

A limit switch box generates binary electrical signals — one for fully open, one for fully closed. It provides position confirmation for on/off isolation valves. An electro-pneumatic positioner controls valve travel to any intermediate position in response to a continuous 4–20 mA input signal, and is used for modulating control valves. The ITS300 is a limit switch box and is not a positioner.


Q2: Which switch option is required for ATEX Zone 1 installation? 

At the enclosure level, the ITS300 Ex d IIC T6 housing is rated for Zone 1. For the switch circuit itself, the intrinsically safe options (SFB2-V3-Y at 8V or SBB2-V3-DA at 24V) are required when the connected barrier and cable routing are designed to IS circuit specifications. The overall Zone 1 approval depends on the complete assembly design, not the housing alone.
